How to find your own sound

Copying licks ain't gonna get you there

Many people focus on copying licks from famous improvisors. While that practice may be good for broadening our understanding of the music theory, it will not result in us reaching our own, unique sound.

And if we don’t achieve our own sound, why would anyone be interested in listening to us imitating other players? They’d much rather spend time listening to those original players. No matter how hard we try, we will never be able to cop someone else’s approach to playing, nor their unique sound. It’s much better to focus on finding our own voice.

In this short video you can see me striving to come up with some unique phrases, even melodies. It’s not easy, but it’s the only way to distinguish ourselves from the horde of players who all sound pretty much the same. And that’s boring.

Stay original, stay who you truly are! Warts and all.
