Joni Mitchell is one of the most brilliant songwriters and performers on the music scene. Her songs are always brimming with breathtaking beauty, both in terms of the unexpected but heavenly harmonies as well as in terms of melodic sophistication. On top of that, Joni is one of the most spectacular lyricist of our time.
Many signers will admit that one of the most challenging songs in Joni’s catalog is her song “The Gallery”. Any time I’ve attempted to sing it, I failed miserably. The song contains one of the most unconventional, jagged melodies, with wide intervallic leaps and also throwing oddball shifts away from the key centre. In a word, a super tough song to sing.
When I suggested to my friend Mary that we should try and do this song, she agreed, although she did not recall hearing that song. I was a bit skeptical that Mary will find it doable, but much to my pleasant surprise, Mary called and said she is okay with signing it.
So, we got together yesterday and after one quick run through the chords, just to warm up her vocal cords, we launched straight into recording this rendition.
I am amazed at what a brilliant job Mary did with this song! It is much to Mary’s credit that she managed to master singing this super difficult song, given such a short time to prepare.
Enjoy!
